Current Authors

I've been reading some authors whom are new to me but definitely well read. A few are:

John Fante's The Brotherhood of the Grape.

Niko Kazantzakis' Zorba the Greek. This title is famous for the movie featuring Anthony Quinn seen the the photo below. This is my father's favorite film of all time.

How's Brotherhood of the Grape reading?

Brotherhood was great. I learned about Fante through Bukowsky, who was a big fan. Fante writes gritty about California, dysfunctional families, drinking -all with a sense of wit and a little self deprecation.

Fante's 'West of Rome' was a great read. I loved that it took place at Point Dume - I place I've surfed many times. I'll have to check out Brotherhood.

I've read "Wait Until Spring, Bandini," "Ask the Dust," and "Dreams From Bunker Hill." "Ask the Dust" was my fave. Too bad Colin Farrel had to ruin any hope of a good movie version... Looks like we're all Bukowskin fans! ;-)

I have a curious story about "Zorbas the Greek". It happened when I moved into Astoria in Queens, NY where I live know. This neighborhood in is majority is Greek, the biggest concentration of greeks outside Greece. The first restaurant we went it was called "The Zorba" and I remember to ask the reason of the name. The waitress told "You never see the movie??!! You have to see it!"

So I saw the movie and loved it. In that same week I went to do an inspection on the apartment bellow the apartment we're doing a renovation and guess who was the owner, Joseph Stein the film writer.
