kelly & kalonji
It’s been so long since I’ve surfed that I have turned to looking for surfing on the tube. Black’s was over the other day and dropped off his copy of Sipping Jetstreams. It’s not unlike Baraka or any of the Phillip Glass films, with the exception of surfing of course.
The other obvious influence was Ozzie Wright’s section -a straight rip-off from one of Shorty's early videos. There’s the Chad Muska scene where he’s bombin around the city streets grooving on the now over-used Buena Vista Social Club song. It’s still a cool section and Mr. Wright is an inspiring character in many ways -perhaps it was a compliment to the Muska video. Anyways back to my original thought tracks…
…the above clip features Kelly Slater surfing in Barbados and I’m almost 99% sure that it’s Sizzla Kalonji on the soundtrack –two of my favourite artists come together at last. Slater is amazing. You can see in this little clip how when he goes in the barrel he often rides on the foam ball, instead of in front of the foam ball like most people. Sure there are lots of guys that surf as well or better but his style is unmistakable. Enjoy.

Surfed sunday, reef, dawn patrol sesh,head high local pro and 5 guys out had a blast. Peace out;
sunday morning? going out after work to see if I can score some shorepound. I gotta at least get some paddling in dammit.
I once watched a final heat between Slater and Joel Parkinson. It was a sight to behold. Slater's domination was total. His grace, wave selection, and energy were such that I knew I was watching one of the very best athletes in the world.
By far the highlight of that entire vid. That alone made the purchase worth it. Funny cause I find myself watching that part over and over again. One of those thats gets me ampin to go surf. And yep thats Sizzla.
